Brookwood Forest Elementary Dining Porch
Mountain Brook, Alabama
Set within a mid-century elementary school context, this screened-in porch addition is linked to the existing cafeteria by three glazed overhead doors. The primary challenge was to resolve the inherent conflict between boisterous elementary school students and the fragile insect screening while creating a light, airy, and transparent structure.
The design solution incorporates built-in benches and a cable rail system around the porch perimeter that keeps children away from the screen while maintaining unobstructed visibility down to the bench seating. Custom benches and rolling tables were part of the project scope.
